GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A Grand Rapids neighborhood association is opening a tool library for residents to check out equipment for home improvement projects.
Starting Tuesday, March 1, residents of Midtown can borrow painting supplies, power washers, drills and more free of charge for up to one week.
Midtown Neighborhood Association officials say the library will help people complete home improvement projects they otherwise couldn’t because of the expense of renting or buying tools or the lack of space to store them.
“The tool library will ensure that all neighbors have access to the items they need to transform their homes and yards into beautiful and comfortable spaces, without having to spend a fortune on tools,” said Jacqueline Scherer, co-chair of the Midtown Neighborhood Association. “The addition of this library will foster equity, sustainability, and community in a way we’ve not offered before.”
Some available tools include a lawn mower, ladder, window insulation kit, chainsaw, garden tools, trimmer/edger, shrub shear, shovel, reciprocating saw kit and more.
The Midtown Neighborhood Association’s tool library opens Tuesday and will have regular hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays.
It will be housed in the association’s office at 1147 E. Fulton St. next to the Fulton Street Farmers Market.
People must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Midtown to borrow tools. The Midtown neighborhood is located between I-196 and Fulton Street to the north and south and Fuller Avenue and Union Avenue to the east and west.
Residents must bring a $5 cash deposit for each tool rented and a photo ID. The deposit will be returned when the tool is brought back.
People can call 616-732-9191 to find out if a certain tool is available to rent. People must fill out a form either online at this link or in-person to borrow tools.
